Serving Wherever She’s Needed: Nan’s Story
Nanette Johnson, known to most as Nan, has been connected to Muskegon Rescue Mission long before she ever wore a volunteer badge. For years, she supported the Mission as a donor and participated in events like Hike for Hunger. But she always knew that one day, she wanted to give more than financial support.
I ALWAYS SAID, WHEN I RETIRE, I’M GOING TO HELP AT THE DAYCARE.”
That opportunity became reality when Bright Futures opened. With decades of experience in children’s ministry and a lifelong passion for missions, Nan found her place serving behind the scenes, and everywhere she’s needed.
Nan volunteers one day a week, arriving early in the morning and staying through the lunch hour. Her day includes supporting classroom transitions, cleaning shared spaces, preparing lunches, running the dishwasher, assisting at the front desk, and stepping in wherever help is needed.
WHATEVER I SEE SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE DONE, I PRETTY MUCH DO.”
After retiring from a career as an IT manager, Nan was ready for meaningful structure again, something that allowed her to pour into others while still supporting her family, including several grandchildren she helps care for.
“Especially after you retire and you’re used to a work structure,” Nan shared, “I knew that I’ve got to get myself involved in something meaningful.”
For Nan, volunteering isn’t about recognition, it’s about purpose. She finds joy in the smallest moments, especially with the children.
Her faith has shaped decades of service, from international mission work to local ministry. Through it all, her heart has remained focused on caring for the most vulnerable.
“The kids are the most vulnerable,” Nan said. “They don’t have a say.”
Because of donor support, Bright Futures exists, and because of volunteers like Nan, it thrives. Her steady presence, joyful spirit, and willingness to serve wherever needed helps create a safe, nurturing environment for children and families every single day.
