muskegon rescue mission, helping people escape poverty, impactful stories, patricia stinson, a safe place to start again

Patricia never expected to find herself homeless.

Like many people, she spent years working, building a life, and eventually retiring. She expected this season of life to be one of stability and security, not uncertainty about where she would live. But when her marriage ended, everything changed.

The home she shared with her spouse was no longer hers, and what followed was a series of temporary living arrangements with family members. Patricia hoped each move would provide stability, but one by one, those arrangements came to an end.
Before long, she found herself facing a reality she never imagined.

“I thought, where am I going to go?” Patricia recalled. “There’s nowhere to go.”

For the first time in her life, she turned to a homeless shelter for help.

“I went to the homeless shelter,” she said. “They have programs that can help me.”

That decision led her to Muskegon Rescue Mission.

Today, Patricia is living in shelter while actively pursuing permanent housing. She meets with TrueNorth, one of our community partners, to search for housing and is following every step placed in front of her. Yet despite her efforts, finding housing has not been easy.

Twice, Patricia has been denied housing because of credit challenges. Still, she continues moving forward.

AS LONG AS YOU FOLLOW THOSE PROGRAMS, YOU SHOULD BE SUCCESSFUL IN GETTING WHAT YOU WANT.”

Throughout her time at the Mission, Patricia has found more than a place to stay. She has found practical support and people willing to walk alongside her as she works toward stability.

One resource that made a difference was the Mission’s clothing voucher program. Through generous donations from the community, Patricia was able to receive clothing at no cost and select items that fit both her needs and her personal style. It was a simple gesture, but one that reminded her she was not navigating this season alone.

She’s also found encouragement through staff, volunteers, and community partners who have helped her navigate the challenges of securing housing.

I’VE MET SOME GREAT PEOPLE.”

Patricia’s story is a reminder that homelessness can happen to anyone. A major life transition, the loss of housing, strained relationships, or the absence of a support system can quickly place someone in a vulnerable position.

Today, Patricia remains hopeful. She isn’t looking for extraordinary solutions. She simply needs a place to call home.

Because of faithful supporters, Patricia has a safe place to sleep while she continues that search. She has meals, guidance, encouragement, and access to resources that help her keep moving forward. Most importantly, she knows she doesn’t have to face this season alone.

Every night of shelter, every meal served, every clothing voucher provided, and every housing application completed is possible because people like you choose to care.

For Patricia, that support means having the time and resources needed to find permanent housing. And for countless others, it means having a safe place to start again.
