The Faces of Homelessness — Children
Little Emily arrived at Muskegon Rescue Mission clutching her mommy’s hand, her tiny fingers interlaced with her mother’s trembling ones. In her other hand, she held tight to a backpack filled with cherished treasures—a well-loved bear, her blanket, a pair of new shoes, and a beaded bracelet her best friend made. She took in the unfamiliar surroundings as she stepped through the shelter doors. She saw families gathered around the meal tables and heard the quiet hum of conversations and the occasional laughter of children trying to make the best of their situation.
Emily didn’t understand why they were there or why they couldn’t go home. She missed the familiar scent of her room and how her mommy’s laughter filled the air. Her mommy cried a lot now, especially when she didn’t think Emily was watching. “Everything will be better soon,” her mommy would say, forcing a smile. But Emily wasn’t sure she believed her.
She is happy Muskegon Rescue Mission gave her and her Mommy food and a safe place to sleep. Now, she no longer goes to bed hungry or scared. She misses the familiar comforts of home — playing in her backyard, having sleepovers, and the simple joy of knowing what each day will bring. At the Mission, everything feels different, and every new face reminds her of how many others are in the same situation.
Although the ladies who work at the shelter are friendly and make them comfortable, Emily longs for the stability of a real home. The volunteers’ kindness and warm smiles help ease her young mind. Emily prays she and her mommy can soon find a new place to call home, where her mommy’s laughter will fill it with love and joy once more.
