Meet John: The Welcoming Heart of the Resource Center

John Hopkins has spent nearly eight years volunteering at the Resource Center, serving as the welcoming face at the front desk. After stepping away for a season due to health challenges, he recently returned and was reminded why he serves.
“What made me feel good about coming back, they said they missed me.”
John’s heart for people experiencing homelessness began long before he ever volunteered himself. As a young boy, he accompanied his grandmother to the mission, where she cooked meals for those in need.
“She goes, ‘Well, honey, they don’t have the luxury of having a home. So we’re here to help them.’”
Those early experiences shaped John’s understanding of compassion and dignity. Years later, that same heart drew him back, not just to volunteer, but to build relationships.
I’M MORE COMPASSIONATE THAN WHEN I STARTED WORKING AT THE MISSION.”
Now, as a front desk volunteer, John offers more than directions or check-ins. He offers presence, a familiar face, a listening ear, and respect for every person who walks through the doors.
“I love it,” he says simply.
Through volunteers like John, the Resource Center remains a place where people are seen, welcomed, and valued.
