Why This Couple Never Stopped Serving: Tracy & Shane

For more than twelve years, Shane and Tracy Crowley have served faithfully at Muskegon Rescue Mission every Thursday night. What began as a short church small group quickly became a calling. Tracy remembers feeling the shift early on: “I think this is where the Lord wants us on Thursday nights.” They simply never left.

Serving at the Mission changed them in ways they didn’t expect. Shane shared:

THE RESCUE MISSION HAS CHANGED US PROBABLY MORE THAN IT HAS CHANGED OTHER PEOPLE WHO GO THROUGH THE MISSION. EVERY TIME WE’VE WALKED OUT OF THERE, I THINK EVERY SINGLE TIME WE’VE BEEN BLESSED.”

Through chapel services, prayer, and conversations, they’ve witnessed God at work. “We’ve seen the Bible actually come to life, and we’ve seen miracles. The gospel became real to us.”

One guest, Miss Carla, especially impacted them. After years of praying with her, they lost touch, until a newsletter revealed she finally had a home. Later, they unexpectedly reunited at a worship service. “All three of us burst into tears, literally,” Shane said. Seeing her joy reminded them of why they serve.

Their weekly visits have reshaped their perspective. Tracy shared, “It makes me a more compassionate person. It could be anybody.” And Shane describes Thursdays as, “Literally like going on a mission trip. It changes you if you allow it to.”

Shane never imagined being a chapel speaker, admitting he was “scared to death” at first. But he learned that willingness matters more than qualifications. “I have nothing to offer. But He does.”

For anyone considering serving, Tracy says, “Just give it a try. It’s worth it.” Shane adds simply: “You’d be missing out if you pass that opportunity. Period.”
