The Impact of Physical Health on Those Facing Homelessness

When we think about homelessness, we often focus on immediate needs like food, shelter, and clothing. While those needs are critical, other factors often shape a person’s ability to move forward: physical health.

For many people experiencing homelessness, poor health is both a cause and a consequence of their situation. Chronic illnesses, injuries, disabilities, and untreated medical conditions can make it difficult to work, maintain relationships, and secure stable housing. At the same time, life without stable shelter often worsens existing health problems.

A simple injury can become a long-term obstacle when there is no safe place to rest and recover. Conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or chronic pain become harder to manage without regular meals, medication storage, or access to healthcare. Over time, the challenges compound, making it even harder to regain stability.

Physical health also affects nearly every other area of life. Ongoing pain and illness can contribute to depression, anxiety, and isolation. Missing work because of health concerns can lead to lost income and housing instability. What begins as a physical struggle often impacts emotional, financial, and relational well-being as well.

For individuals living with disabilities, these challenges can be even greater. Accessing housing, employment, healthcare, and support services often requires navigating additional barriers that many people never consider.

That’s why partnerships matter.

Every Monday at Muskegon Rescue Mission’s Community Resource Center, Janet Perreault from Disability Network West Michigan meets with guests who need help accessing disability benefits, Social Security, employment resources, and other critical support. These services help remove barriers that can keep people trapped in homelessness and provide a pathway toward long-term stability.

One guest who understands these challenges firsthand is Simone Moore.

Years ago, Simone was prescribed pain medication following surgery. What began as a routine part of her recovery eventually led to addiction, which contributed to years of homelessness, incarceration, and instability. But Simone’s story did not end there.

After encountering Christ, Simone’s life began to change. She found freedom from addiction and committed herself to rebuilding her future. Day after day, she showed up at Muskegon Rescue Mission, taking advantage of every resource available to her and working toward a fresh start.

On February 3, 2026, Simone moved into her own home.

Her story is a powerful reminder that lasting change often begins when the barriers holding someone back are addressed. When physical health improves, people are better equipped to pursue employment, maintain housing, rebuild relationships, and move forward with hope.

At Muskegon Rescue Mission, we believe true transformation happens when we care for the whole person. By addressing physical needs alongside emotional and spiritual needs, we help individuals and families escape poverty spiritually, emotionally, and financially.

You can be part of that transformation. Through your support, neighbors like Simone can find healing, stability, and a path toward lasting change.

Together, we can help people find their way home.

Join our mission—help individuals and families escape poverty—spiritually, emotionally, and financially.
