From Homelessness to Helping Others: Shawn’s Story
Two years after graduating from the program, life for Shawn Kettler looks very different. He now has his own apartment, steady work, and a renewed sense of purpose. “I got my own place. I got everything I need,” he shared. Even more meaningful is the ripple effect, he was able to help his sister secure housing and a job, ending her season of homelessness as well. The relationships built during the program didn’t end at graduation. “We made friends for life,” he said, explaining how he still stays in touch with others who walked the journey alongside him.
Today, his life is centered on faith and service. “I work for the Lord. I just happened to get paid for it this time,” he said with a smile. Each morning begins with devotion and a simple prayer:
What do you got for me today?”
That posture shows up in everyday moments, sharing lunch with someone in need, giving away shoes or clothing, praying with strangers, and offering encouragement through small books and prayer coins. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve helped people that were having a bad day, and the whole day’s changed.”
Looking ahead, he remains open to wherever God leads next. “I don’t know how long I’m gonna work here. God’s gonna send me somewhere else.” For now, he knows he is exactly where he is meant to be, living out the mission daily. “That’s what this is for, to help people.”
His story is a powerful reminder that the impact of the program doesn’t end at graduation, it continues, transforming lives and communities long after.
