Challenges Homeless Youth Face – Education

Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, and it’s crucial that every young person, regardless of their housing situation, has the opportunity to thrive. Homeless youth are not a lost cause; they are full of potential and can achieve great things with the proper support!

Homelessness is a harsh reality for many teens and young adults, creating significant barriers to their education. Imagine trying to concentrate on school while worrying about where you’ll sleep or how you’ll eat. Without a stable home, these challenges make it incredibly difficult for young people to focus on their studies.

One of the biggest risks for homeless youth is not obtaining a high school diploma or GED. Without this basic education, they are much more likely to face homelessness again in the future. Nearly half of homeless youth come from families that have also experienced homelessness. Job opportunities are limited without a diploma, making it even harder to break generational poverty.

One student’s account highlights the effort required to succeed in education despite the challenges of homelessness. “Being homeless forced me to work ten times harder for my education. While other students scrolled through Facebook or shopped online during class, I had no choice but to focus. I didn’t have the luxury of studying whenever and wherever I wanted, and failing was not an option.” 

Several agencies partner with MRM’s Community Resource Center to provide essential educational resources that address literacy, GED completion, and career training. In addition, MRM operates food pantries at MCC and Baker College campuses to ensure students can focus on their studies without the burden of hunger.  

Homelessness is one of the most life-altering experiences young people can endure during their school years. By understanding their challenges and working together on solutions, we can help break the cycle of homelessness and give every young person a chance to succeed in school.
